The Camel Country of Rajasthan
Journey into the heart of the Thar Desert where magnificent forts rise from golden sands, ornate havelis whisper tales of merchant wealth, and the famous Camel Festival celebrates centuries of desert heritage.
Bikaner, founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, a Rathore Rajput prince and son of the founder of Jodhpur, is a vibrant desert city in the heart of the Thar Desert. Unlike many Rajasthani cities, Bikaner was not built around a lake or river but emerged as an important trade route stop between Central Asia and the Gujarat coast. The city's strategic location made it a thriving center for commerce, and its rulers amassed great wealth, which they poured into building spectacular forts, palaces, and havelis that stand to this day.
Bikaner is perhaps best known for Junagarh Fort, one of the few major forts in Rajasthan that is not built on a hilltop. This magnificent ground-level fortress, built by Raja Rai Singh in 1593, has never been conquered and houses an extraordinary collection of palaces, temples, and pavilions within its walls. The city is also internationally famous for its annual Camel Festival, which celebrates the "Ship of the Desert" with camel races, beauty contests, folk performances, and vibrant processions that draw visitors from around the world.
Beyond its architectural splendor, Bikaner is a food lover's paradise. The city is the birthplace of the legendary Bikaneri Bhujia, a spicy snack that has become a household name across India. Bikaneri rasgullas, papad, and other namkeen varieties are equally celebrated. The old city is a treasure trove of ornate Rampuria Havelis with their intricate jharokhas and carved facades, while the mysterious Karni Mata Temple at Deshnoke, home to thousands of revered rats, remains one of India's most unique and fascinating pilgrimage sites.
